2019 High School Volleyball Championship

The SCIAA hosted the High School Volleyball Championship October 3rd at Airways. This year’s contenders featured some familiar teams and one newcomer. The first match of the night was the AA Division with last year’s champion Kirby Cougars taking on 2017 Champions MLK Prep. It was a great match up between these two teams and a close first set with Kirby winning 25-21. MLK fell behind in the 2nd set losing 25-16. In the third set it could’ve been anyone’s game. The Rams chased after every ball and scored off of a couple great rallies but it wasn’t enough to take down the Cougars who became back to back champs after winning that set 26-24. Kirby is coached by Deanna Smith, game MVP honors went to sophomore Guya Acoff.

The second match of the night was a rematch from last year’s championship featuring White Station and Germantown. These two teams know each other well and have met up for the past few championships. Germantown started the game strong but cooled off a bit as White Station easily won the first set 25-13. The Spartans won the next two sets 25-18 and 25-16. Although Germantown fell in 3 sets they had a very talented team that made some great plays but they once again had to settle for the runner-up plaque as Coach Theresa Thomas and her Spartans won their 8th straight title for the AAA Division. The game’s MVP was senior Devyn Davis.

The final match of the night was for the A Division where last year’s champions East took on newcomer Hillcrest. East has a very athletic squad but that didn’t stop Hillcrest. The Vikings came ready to play and played the ball very well. The Mustangs kept attacking and set up several spikes to keep Hillcrest at bay in the first set 25-19. The second set went much like the first but despite their best efforts Hillcrest just couldn’t get the edge on East who won the set 25-20. More than halfway through the third set it looked as though the match was coming to an end but Hillcrest came back from being down 7 points and played their hearts out. It seemed to take East by surprise after playing almost flawlessly they let Hillcrest back in the game with the Vikings serving up several unanswered points. The Mustangs started volleying back and forth and from that point on each side traded scores. Hillcrest almost forced a 4th set but after an extremely great effort they fell 33-31. East went on to celebrate their second consecutive championship, their first under Coach Meah King. The MVP of the game was Condoleeza Black.

Each of this year’s winners won titles last year which is the first time all three divisions had back to back wins. The talent in Memphis is rising and each team including our runner-ups MLK Prep, Germantown and Hillcrest had some great moments. As always the SCIAA would like to thank the fans and parents who support these teams throughout the year. Check out post-game interviews on our Facebook page.
